Why I'm Running

I'm running because I want to be an advocate for Ward 1. That means that I will make it a priority to attend every meeting and workshop, even if they’re held during the day. In budget discussions, I will work to make sure we get our fair share of city funding. I’ll also make sure that our seats on city boards and commissions are always filled, since there are plenty of people throughout the ward who would love to be more involved. I look forward to personally meeting with all of our citizens and e-mails, phone calls, meeting requests, and even snail mail will be responded to promptly.

I'm running because I want to make sure that our streets and our homes are safe. We need to have police officers on patrol during the day where and when they are needed. I want to strengthen successful police programs and support neighborhood groups. Any neighborhood that wants a Neighborhood Watch sign should be able to receive one. Additionally, I believe that owners of abandoned properties and landlords who disobey city law should be held responsible for their actions. I’m also proud to have the support of the Des Moines firefighters and my regular conversations with their leadership on how to keep our community safe will only increase if I'm elected.

I'm running because I want to continue the successful economic development of our city. Des Moines has earned the top place on many national lists. Our population is growing and our economy is starting to do better. We need to make sure that the benefits of downtown development push out into the surrounding neighborhoods in our ward. We need to support Drake University and the businesses around it and the revitalization of the commercial districts for each of our neighborhoods. Additionally, we need to do everything we can to bring our young professionals back to Des Moines. We need to make the case nationwide that you can earn a better salary, buy a better house, and have a better standard of living in our city. If that means I need to make the case in person, I’ll pack my bags.

I'm running because I want to make sure that our infrastructure is as modern and as energy efficient as possible. With my background as the state’s coordinator for energy funding, I’ll help secure the resources necessary to make this happen. Additionally, I want to support the Des Moines Neighborhood Finance Corporation (NFC) program and make sure it’s responsive to the needs of our citizens. It’s been wildly successful throughout the ward and our residents should be encouraged to take advantage of it. This includes those who want to utilize it for historical renovations and for our seniors who want to use it to help them stay in their own homes.

Finally, I'm running because I want to make sure that our city government is as open, transparent, and responsive as possible. Our citizens should always know what their government is doing and should be well aware before city action is taken. I firmly believe that “sunlight is the best disinfectant” and will always err on the side of trusting our citizens with information. If the dozens of meetings I've had over the past few months have taught me anything, it's that we know what's best for our ward and for or city.

I look forward to meeting even more voters and continuing these conversations in the coming months. If you have any ideas of your own, please don't hesitate to contact me.
